Strain Collection Diversity
Our proprietary strain collection has now grown to over 25,000 microbes – one of the largest in the industry. The characterization of the strain collection to the genus and species level confirms that we are isolating diverse microbes, many of which were previously undiscovered.
The diversity of our strain collection is due in part to the isolation methods we have developed to select specific groups of microbes, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, Actinomycetes, fungi, and yeasts.
We also use a variety of selection regimes to isolate subsets of microbes with defined properties, including thermophilic organisms adapted for growth at either 65°C or 75°C. Other growth conditions are selected for microbes that can perform specific chemical conversions.
As part of an integrated strategy for gene discovery, we apply our knowledge of genomics and microbial sequences to target our isolation strategies. With this approach, we can enrich our collection for organisms that are known to carry genes of high commercial value.
