Markus has an accomplished history in international agriculture research, development and management that spans 24 years ranging from start-up companies to experience with acquisitions, mergers and divestitures (International Plant Research Institute, CA; Rohm & Haas Co., PA; Swiss Federal Research Station for Agronomy, Zurich, Switzerland).

Before Athenix, Markus held senior global management positions in human resources, organizational development and marketing/communications at Roche and Zurich Financial Services. He served as Member of the Executive Committee of Zurich Re.

Markus received his M.S. in agronomy from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, and his Ph.D. in plant pathology/breeding from the University of Minnesota.
